Alone in the office I felt two things simultaneously one was that I wanted to make everything perfect and put Mikes life in order in record time, the second was that I wanted to run crying from the house screaming that I was unable to cope. I took a deep breath and thinking about how much I needed the money I went up to the kitchen to dig out some cleaning products and a large bin liner. Having turned off the porn sites I began to run a clean up on both the computers knowing it would be a miracle if either of the machines were virus free but I needed to check. I sorted the unopened envelopes into 3 large piles based on size. Mike received very little personal mail other than the stacks of embossed invitations. I opened them first and discarded the ones referring to past dates. I sifted through the rest of the mail and found one unpaid bill after another, red letter after red letter sat on the table, threats of court action, unpaid credit card bills, utility bills, car services, parking tickets. I sifted through for duplicates and then put them in order of urgent (over due) very urgent (multiple red letters) and right now (threats of legal action). The total amount owed by Mike to his various creditors was £137,474.43.
Now all I had to do was tell him.
